Narrative Description of Program & Philosophy:

The ceremony begins with a drum call and precession to the site of the ceremony. Participants are welcomed, libations are poured and opening prayers are made. The Mission statement and background on ADACI are presented. A brief oral presentation is given explaining the purpose of Ancestor veneration in African culture and the Re-Afrikanization process. Drumming, dancing and singing to the Orishas begin.  The drum and dance presentation is followed by the announcement of and reading of the ancestors that have passed during the past year. Participants are than directed to an ancestral alter which contains tea light candles. Participants than light a candle for their personal ancestors and present their offerings in the designated hand constructed box. Libations are poured onto the offerings and they are presented to the Detroit River as participants sing and or pray silently. A prayer of blessing and acceptance of the offerings is performed and the ceremony is concludes with a closing prayer.
